South Carolina Republican Gov. Henry McMaster won the GOP primary Tuesday night, the Associate Press declared, and will face the Democratic winner in November for a chance for a second full term, making him the longest-serving governor in the state's history.
McMaster beat Harrison Musselwhite, a trucker and former businessman, whose campaign focused on allowing open carry of guns, preventing government vaccine mandates and getting rid of state income taxes.
South Carolina limits governors two four-year terms, but he became governor in January 2017 when, as lieutenant governor, he assumed offfice after then Gov. Nikki Haley resigned to become U.N. ambassador for then-President Donald Trump.
He was then elected to his own full term, so with another full term he would serve a total of 10 years.
McMaster will face Democrat James Clyburn in November.
