North Carolina’s leading environmental regulator Michael Regan will likely be Joe Biden’s pick to lead the Environmental Protection Agency, according to sources familiar with the Biden transition team's plan.
Politico reports the selection will appease progressives who want to focus on minority and poor communities facing threats from pollution. If confirmed, Regan would be the second Black EPA chief. Former President Barack Obama's first-term administrator Lisa Jackson was the first, the outlet reports.
If placed in the role, Regan would be tasked with carrying out Biden's climate change plans. Biden seeks to eliminate carbon dioxide emissions from the power grid by 2035 and put the country on a path toward net-zero emissions by 2050.
