President-elect Joe Biden is set to announce the appointment of David Cohen — a veteran of former President Barack Obama's administration — as CIA deputy director.

The announcement is expected to come on Friday, according to Politico.

Cohen, a Washington, D.C., lawyer, was the CIA deputy director from 2015 to 2017. Cohen had previously served in the Treasury Department.

At one point, he had been mentioned as Biden's possible top choice to head the spy agency. But Biden announced Monday he had chosen former Ambassador to Russia William Burns to be his CIA director.

NBC News reported that John Brennan, CIA director when Cohen was deputy, welcomed news of Cohen's appointment.

"During his two years as deputy director, David embraced CIA's mission and became intimately familiar with its capabilities, authorities, and global activities," Brennan said. "He is widely respected within agency ranks, and he and Bill Burns will make an outstanding leadership team."
