Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas met with leaders and immigration advocates in Texas amid the massive migrant influx.
During a press conference Thursday, Texas Rep. Veronica Escobar (D) said the majority of the visit was focused on the increased number of migrants and unaccompanied minors trying to enter the U.S. illegally.
Escobar said a migrant advocate who met with Mayorkas claimed the treatment of unaccompanied children has improved, however, disagrees with members of Congress investigating the holding facilities while children are being housed there.
“I think there are ways to do it and I’ll give you an example…the shelter facilities, if folks can see them before the kids go in,” she stated. “They can video the facilities, ask questions, get responses and share with the country what they saw — that is really important.”
This comes as Kamala Harris continues to draw harsh criticism over her absence from the U.S.-Mexico border region and her lack of transparency as she goes on 18 days without a formal press conference on the issue.
