The National Security Agency is placing former GOP operative Michael Ellis as the NSA's top lawyer in the final days of the Trump administration.

Defense Secretary Christopher Miller ordered the move Saturday, The Washington Post reported.

NSA Director Gen. Paul Nakasone had delayed Ellis' assignment since his selection in November, sources told the Post.

"Mr. Ellis accepted his final job offer [Saturday] afternoon," the NSA said in a statement Sunday. "NSA is moving forward with his employment."

Ellis' assignment was sought by the White House, according to sources, and has been rebuked by critics as politicizing the national security council.

The move will add a layer of difficulty for the incoming Biden administration to quickly replace the acting assignment, according to the report.
