If Rudy Giuliani is leading the Senate impeachment trial for President Donald Trump, the former president will be doomed, according to Republican strategist Karl Rove.
"I think it's all going to boil down to what the president's defense is," Rove told "Fox News Sunday."
"Rudy Giuliani charted a very bad course in the morning papers, when he suggested that the argument was going to be, 'well, there couldn't have been incitement because all of the charges of widespread voter fraud are true.'
"Well, those charges his so-called experts of his campaign have mustered to advocate have been rejected by over 50 courts with judges appointed by President Trump, President Obama, President Bush, President Clinton and I think even one Reagan justice."
If all Senate Democrats and independents vote to impeach the president for the incitement of the storming of the Capitol, it would take 17 Republicans to side to block Trump from running for office again.
"If it's the Rudy Giuliani defense, there is a strong likelihood that more than 17 will [vote yes on impeachment], because essentially that argument is: 'This was justified, the attack on the Capitol and the attempt to end the congressional hearing on certifying the election was justified, because all these charges are true," Rove told host Chris Wallace.
Giuliani told ABC News the president could not have incited storming of the Capitol because they did not flee the "Stop the Steal" rally immediately.
“You'd have to have people running out," Giuliani told ABC News. "You'd have to have people running out of that frozen speech right up to the Capitol, and that's basically incitement."
As for the "trial by combat" rally remark by Giuliani, he told ABC News it was a pop culture "Game of Thrones" reference, not a call for violence.
