Vice President Mike Pence on Thursday asked a federal judge to dismiss an attempt by Rep. Louie Gohmert, R-Texas, and other Republicans to broaden Pence’s powers in a way that would enable him to overturn Joe Biden's electoral win.
This, according to a report by The Hill on Thursday.
The electoral tally is to be certified by Congress next Wednesday. The action is typically ceremonial. But with President Donald Trump and his campaign standing by assertions that voter fraud resulted in Trump's loss, more than 100 Republican House members are expected to challenge the perfunctory approval of the Electoral College results.
At least one senator, Josh Hawley of Missouri, is expected to join the effort, which would delay the certifying of Biden's win, but most political observers doubt it would derail it, with legislative majorities not on board with such an upheaval.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has actively discouraged lawmakers from participating in the long-shot effort.
This is a developing story.
