Former President Donald Trump has endorsed Rep. Lisa McClain for reelection, saying she is "doing a wonderful job representing the great people of Michigan."
Trump said in a statement that McClain has "my complete and total endorsement," stressing that "she is working hard to secure our borders, defend the Second Amendment, and support our military, vets, law enforcement, and energy independence."
The former president added that McClain is "a tremendous advocate of our America First agenda, Lisa is fighting to protect your rights against unconstitutional mandates and to prevent Joe Biden and Gretchen Whitmer from shutting down Line 5," referring to the dispute over the dual pipeline under the Straits of Mackinac.
The Detroit News reported that McClain is running for a second term in a safe Republican seat representing the new 9th District. Only one Democrat so far has filed to run as a challenger.
McClain is only the second incumbent that Trump has endorsed in the state, although it is his 15th overall in Michigan in this election cycle.
McClain was 1 of the 3 Michigan Republican lawmakers who objected Jan. 6 last year to the electoral results that made President Joe Biden’s victory official.
McClain told The Detroit News that she was "thrilled" to get Trump's endorsement, saying "during my first term in office, I've been fighting passionately against the Democrats' horrific policies in Washington. Our border crisis is a national security nightmare; inflation is the highest it's been in 20 years; and our freedoms are in jeopardy like never before due to unconstitutional vaccine mandates."
