Trump eyes Rep Russell Fry for South Carolina special election seat

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

President Donald Trump teased who he may like to see as a long-term replacement for the late Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., as a special election to lock in a candidate for the seat fast approaches.

Private and public jockeying is already underway to snag Trump’s coveted endorsement in the special election, which is slated for Aug. 11, with two lawmakers already expressing interest in launching a campaign.

And as members of the South Carolina GOP congressional delegation and beyond line up for the race, the president hinted that he may already have a favorite: Rep. Russell Fry, R-S.C.

“I think Russell Fry, a young congressman, is outstanding, and that could happen. I could see that happening,” Trump told Newsmax on Monday night. “I think he’s a very, very talented person.”

Trump backed Fry in his first bid for Congress in 2022, where he toppled former Rep. Tom Rice, R-S.C., in the primary. Rice was one of 10 House Republicans to vote to impeach Trump following the Jan. 6, 2021, riots on Capitol Hill.

‘THE HALLS OF THE SENATE ALREADY FEEL EMPTY’: TEARFUL THUNE HONORS LINDSEY GRAHAM AS SISTER TAKES HIS SEAT

“He took the place of somebody that was — I mean, he’s doing much better than the person that preceded him,” Trump said. “He’s been very popular in the state, so I think a name like Russell Fry is somebody you can watch out for and there are probably some others.”

Trump’s comments on Fry come after Politico reported that the lawmaker has been communicating with the White House about a run and was viewed as a top contender for the president’s stamp of approval. Fox News Digital did not immediately hear back from the White House or Fry on whether he’s being eyed for the special election.

In the meantime, Trump threw his support behind Graham’s sister, Sen.-designate Darline Graham, to take over the lawmaker’s seat for the remainder of his term. South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster appointed her on Monday, and she’ll be sworn in to the role Tuesday afternoon.

Trump said that he believed Graham would be there “only on an interim basis.”

Meanwhile, Reps. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., and Ralph Norman, R-S.C., are eyeing the race, too. Norman has gone so far as to ask Trump for his endorsement.

Both Mace and Norman failed to clinch the GOP nomination for governor in South Carolina, which ultimately went to South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson, who toppled Trump-backed South Carolina Lt. Gov. Pam Evette.

Arkansas ranked No. 1 state for religious liberty in annual index

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

FIRST ON FOX: Arkansas has been ranked the nation’s top state for religious liberty after Republican Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders signed a series of laws expanding faith protections that helped lift the state to the top.

Earning a score of 89.2%, Arkansas became one of only two states to earn the First Liberty Institute’s annual Religious Liberty in the States index’s first-ever “excellent” rating. The index evaluates states using 50 legal protections across 20 religious liberty safeguards spanning education, healthcare, family law, economic activity and other areas of daily life.

“Religious liberty is America’s First Freedom, and Arkansas is leading the nation in protecting it,” Sanders said.

“Our rights come from God, not government, and every American should be free to live according to their faith and conscience. We’ll continue defending that freedom and ensuring the Natural State remains the best place in the country to live, work and worship.”

The Natural State climbed six spots from last year’s rankings after lawmakers approved several measures expanding legal protections for religious exercise and conscience rights.

Arkansas’ rise was driven largely by Act 677, legislation Sanders signed last year that bars state and local governments from penalizing people, businesses and religious organizations for acting according to their religious beliefs regarding marriage and biological sex.

The state’s religious liberty push also included the Conscience Protection Act, signed by Sanders in 2023, which expanded Arkansas’ Religious Freedom Restoration Act by prohibiting state government discrimination against religious organizations based on their religious identity or status.

Kelly Shackelford, president, CEO and chief counsel at First Liberty, said other states should follow Arkansas’ lead and “strengthen religious liberty protections in their own states.”

“Religious liberty is best protected when leaders are willing to act before the rights of people of faith are threatened,” Shackelford said.

Dr. Mark David Hall, director of the Religious Liberty in the States project, said Arkansas demonstrates how states can protect what America’s founders called “the sacred right of conscience,” allowing people to practice their faith not just at church, but in their everyday lives.

“States have always served as laboratories of liberty, and this year’s results show why that matters,” Hall said.

Sanders also publicly defended religious freedom in December. She rejected demands from the Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF), a group that advocates for the separation of church and state, to reverse her proclamation closing state offices for Christmas.

In a response letter previously obtained by Fox News Digital, Sanders pushed back on claims it was unconstitutional, saying “only by voicing our own faith and celebrating other faiths can we make our state’s diverse religious communities feel seen and heard.”

“With this index, citizens and legislators can see where their state is doing well, where it still has room to improve, and which existing laws could help better protect the right of conscience,” Dr. Paul D. Mueller, associate director of the Religious Liberty in the States project, said.

Kamala Harris mocked for WNBA speech over Kash Patel double standard

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Former Vice President Kamala Harris drew ridicule over a motivational speech to the WNBA’s Los Angeles Sparks over the weekend – with critics arguing the appearance was another “word salad.”

Harris told the Sparks they were making an “incredible impact” on the country, while critics ripped her circuitous delivery and the fact she went from the Democrats’ presidential nominee to “giving speeches to the WNBA.”

“I travel our country. Young girls, boys, people of every gender background, race, watch the ‘W’, and understand how inspiring it is,” Harris said.

“So keep doing what you’re doing. You guys are impacting people who you may never meet,” she said, before claiming that that includes people who “may never know your names or mine but they are aware of what you are.”

“And it is giving them a sense of their value, their dignity, and what they have a right to expect from this world — so congratulations on this game, but congratulations as much as anything else for the path you guys are charting. It is extraordinary to watch.”

Outkick founder Clay Travis was nonplussed by Harris’ remarks, saying the former vice president made “zero sense.”

“Was there any outrage like there was when Kash Patel was in the men’s locker room after the Olympic team won a gold medal at the Olympics? No, I don’t think so,” she said.

Trump signs order shrinking Bears Ears, Grand Staircase monuments

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

President Donald Trump signed an executive order drastically shrinking the size of two national monument areas in Utah on Monday.

The order applies to the Grand Staircase-Escalante and Bears Ears national monuments, shrinking their total coverage by roughly 90% from 3 million acres to 300,000. The areas were established as federal monuments by President Bill Clinton in 1996 and Barack Obama in 2016, respectively.

“They took the land from the people quite honestly,” Trump said during the Monday signing ceremony. “We’re giving it back.”

Utah Gov. Spencer Cox also attended the signing and praised the move, saying the original size of the monuments was far too expansive.

“We believe that under the Antiquities Act, it’s very clear that these monument designations are supposed to be the smallest area possible to protect the antiquities, and these multimillion-acre monuments that are bigger than the state of Delaware certainly do not fit that designation,” he said.

Local Native American groups have criticized the move, however, as both monument areas contain parts of their history, including cliffside villages and petroglyphs.

Protections for national monuments apply to the surrounding landscape as well, preventing drilling, mining and construction. The original designations for the two monuments contained large deposits of coal and uranium.

Lindsey Graham called aide with chest pains before 911 was summoned, senator says

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

A Senate Republican added further detail to the late Sen. Lindsey Graham’s, R-S.C., final moments thanks to an unlikely connection.

Sen. Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala., revealed that it was a former member of his staff that called for medical assistance to aid Graham over the weekend, who died suddenly just after his return from an overseas trip.

“My former scheduler was Lindsey’s scheduler, and one of my staff members was with that scheduler the night Lindsey called,” Tuberville told reporters. “He called [and] basically said, ‘Listen, I’m having chest pains. You know, I need to do something.’ ‘Did you call 911?’ And he goes, ‘No, that’s the reason I called you.’”

“And so she called 911 … By the time she got there, 911 had knocked the door down, and they were working on him,” he continued.

A preliminary cause of death was revealed Sunday evening. His office said that the longtime lawmaker had died from “aortic dissection due to arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease.”

Aortic dissection is when a tear occurs in the inner wall of the aorta, the body’s main artery, and is a life-threatening medical emergency.

“Lindsey basically worked himself to death, most of us have families, he didn’t have any family,” Tuberville said. “And if we had a couple of days off, he went to that airport, and he went somewhere to try to work out something for our country.”

Axios reported that in one of Graham’s final conversations, he told an unnamed source that he was feeling unwell but wanted to wait until after his scheduled appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press” to seek medical attention.

“I can’t die now. I still need to do the Russia sanctions, get Iran sorted out and do Israeli-Saudi normalization,” Graham said.

His death has rocked the Senate, where emotional tributes rolled in throughout the day on Monday, the upper chamber’s first day back in Washington, D.C., since recessing for the Fourth of July.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., in an emotional tribute to the late lawmaker, said that the “halls of the Senate already feel empty without him.”

“I am comforted by the knowledge that, in the end, he has just changed his address. And that one day, Mr. President,” Thune said through tears. “We will laugh together again.”

Trump’s housing chief says Florida and Texas lead on affordability

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Homeownership remains out of reach for many Americans, but Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Scott Turner reveals some states are making more progress than others.

In an exclusive interview with Fox News Digital, Turner said Florida and Texas are “ahead of the game” on housing affordability, citing efforts to expand housing opportunities and reduce barriers to new construction.

His comments come as home costs has emerged as a major midterm issue, with elevated mortgage rates, a persistent housing shortage and rising construction costs continuing to put homeownership out of reach for many families.

Against that backdrop, President Donald Trump’s HUD chief argued that increasing housing supply through state and local reforms will be critical to improving affordability, saying the Trump administration is working to reduce regulatory barriers and encourage more homebuilding nationwide.

“Florida is really ahead of the game, in particular when it comes to opportunities, and Texas is doing a great job,” Turner told Fox News Digital from the National Mall last week on one of the final days of the Great American State Fair.

He said states that prioritize housing development and work closely with local communities are better positioned to keep pace with demand.

Beyond those two states, Turner said other communities are also making strides.

“Other states are laser focused on this. I was just in Philadelphia and they are dialed in and working very well together,” he said of the Pennsylvania city, addind: “Omaha, Nebraska, they have great collaboration and working relationships.”

The comments align with what homebuilders describe as a key advantage in many fast-growing Southern states.

By easing regulatory hurdles and making it easier to build new homes, states such as Texas and Florida have been better positioned to keep pace with rapid population growth than markets with more restrictive zoning and permitting rules, industry leaders previously told Fox News Digital.

ONE SOUTHERN CITY YOU’VE NEVER HEARD OF IS GROWING FASTER THAN ANYWHERE ELSE IN AMERICA

“Those economies are wide open. They are inviting more businesses, they’re generally low-tax states and they’ve made housing a priority,” National Association of Home Builders President and CEO Jim Tobin previously told Fox News Digital.

“They’ve got the land and the will and courage to let builders build in those areas to meet the housing demand for those new jobs.”

The approach has taken on greater importance as Americans continue relocating to lower-tax states, fueling demand for homes in many Sun Belt markets.

Housing experts say states that pair population growth with policies that encourage new construction are generally better positioned to accommodate newcomers without worsening housing shortages or putting additional upward pressure on prices.

Turner said the Trump administration is pursuing many of the same strategies he credited in states like Florida and Texas, including reducing regulatory barriers and encouraging new home construction to boost supply and improve affordability.

“That’s what we’re doing now is easing the regulatory environment, bringing the cost down, raising the supply so builders can build and homeowners can buy,” Turner said.

Trump showcases INDYCAR vehicles for Pennsylvania Avenue race in August

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

President Donald Trump on Monday spent the early afternoon showcasing INDYCAR vehicles that will participate in a first-of-its-kind race in Washington, D.C. in August.

“Unprecedented events will take place next month right here in our nation’s capital. On August 22nd and 23rd,” Trump said, standing outside the White House on Executive Avenue where an INDYCAR pit stop was demonstrated for the president.

“It will be an awesome display of American patriotism and raw horsepower ingenuity,” Trump said. “You’re going to see cars at the level that they’ve never been at before, with cars racing more than 190 miles and even higher than that down Pennsylvania Avenue.”

“It wasn’t exactly designed for that,” Trump joked of the upcoming race down the National Mall and streets of Washington, D.C.

“But what Sean Duffy has done with these incredible, brilliant people is really amazing. It’s going to be a sight for the ages,” the president continued. “It really will be something special, and they’re going to go all around the National Mall at speeds that are not quite, if we did that during the regular day, I think people would be put in jail, perhaps for the rest of their lives.”

Graham reportedly put off medical treatment until after scheduled TV appearance

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

The late Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., reportedly wanted to hold off getting medical assistance until after his scheduled appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

In what could have been his final conversation, Graham, who suddenly died at 71 years old after a “brief and sudden illness,” told a person that he was feeling unwell, Axios reported. When the person pushed the lawmaker to get medical attention, he reportedly said that he’d do so after his TV hit.

After he held a call with President Donald Trump, Graham, in what could have been his final conversation before his sudden passing, told an unnamed source that he was feeling unwell, Axios reported. When the source pushed the lawmaker to get medical attention, he reportedly said he’d wait until after his “Meet the Press” appearance on Sunday.

“I can’t die now. I still need to do the Russia sanctions, get Iran sorted out and do Israeli-Saudi normalization,” Graham said, according to the report.

Graham’s office released a preliminary cause of death on Sunday evening that found the longtime lawmaker had died from “aortic dissection due to arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease.”

Aortic dissection is when a tear occurs in the inner wall of the aorta, the body’s main artery, and is a life-threatening medical emergency.

“The death certificate will be PENDING until all the toxicological and microscopic testing are finalized and at that point the death certificate will be updated to reflect the cause of death and appropriately classify the manner of death,” Graham’s office said.

President Donald Trump had believed he may have been the last person to speak with Graham before his death.

“I don’t know exactly, but I got a message about 1 in the morning from one of the people in his office that he had passed away. I said, ‘I just can’t believe it,’” Trump told NBC’s “Meet the Press.” “He was like a member of the family to me. It’s very tough, actually.”

One of Graham’s top priorities before his death was laying the groundwork to normalize relations between Saudi Arabia and Israel — one of his many forays into foreign affairs in the region.

He had just come from Ukraine, and had renewed backing from the White House for one of his other top priorities — levying bone-crushing sanctions against Russia to cripple its war machine.

Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, D-N.H., who traveled with Graham overseas, said in a statement on Saturday that his death should spur the passage of their Russia sanctions package.

“There can be no more fitting memorial to Lindsey, his legacy or the causes he fought for than to pass this legislation and realize his long-held dream of an independent and secure Ukraine,” Shaheen said.

With the Senate’s scheduled return on Monday, the lawmaker’s death leaves a power vacuum in the upper chamber and a scramble behind the scenes to replace him in South Carolina.

It also possibly jeopardizes elements of Trump’s agenda, including the annual National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), nominations and his coveted SAVE America Act, which Graham strongly supported.

Mamdani hit over link between high rents and unchecked immigration

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is facing renewed criticism over housing affordability as rents in Manhattan and Brooklyn hit record highs, with conservative commentators arguing that immigration-driven demand is adding pressure to an already tight rental market that the mayor campaigned to ease.

Manhattan’s and Brooklyn’s median rents reached $5,295 and $4,350, respectively, in June, according to an analysis conducted by the Corcoran Group, a real estate firm. The most recent available data shows roughly 38% of New Yorker residents were born outside the United States, and about 40% of rentals in the city are occupied by foreign-born individuals, though the data does not distinguish between legal and illegal immigration status.

“You declared yourself a sanctuary city. You ‘welcomed’ hundreds of thousands of illegals. Then you had to find places to put them,” conservative radio host Andrew Wilkow wrote on X, reacting to news of increased rents. “That put pressure on housing supply. Shortages create price increases. It’s pretty simple.”

BIDEN’S ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION SURGE CAUSED HIGHER RENT AND HOME PRICES, FED STUDY FINDS

A 2003 paper published by the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia found that immigration “pushes up rents and housing values in destination cities,” with an immigration inflow equal to 1% of a city’s population associated with about a 1% increase in average rents and housing values. More recently, a paper published by the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas in March found that a 1% increase in illegal immigrants working in a given area corresponded to a 1.4% increase in rental prices because localities did not build enough new housing to match population growth.

Both papers reflect the authors’ findings and do not represent official positions of the Federal Reserve System or its regional banks.

“Young Americans compete for housing with millions of foreign arrivals,” Rep. Brandon Gill, R-Texas, wrote on Monday in response to the rent data out of New York City.

‘AMERICAN HOUSES ARE FOR AMERICAN PEOPLE’: TRUMP HOUSING CHIEF INSISTS IMMIGRATION CRACKDOWN WILL LOWER COSTS

Between 2020 and 2023, the most recent years available, the share of renter households associated with foreign-born New Yorkers rose from 37% to 40%, according to the New York City Housing and Vacancy Survey. The data does not distinguish a resident’s legal status, making it unclear whether illegal immigrants represent an increased share of renters.

New York City Comptroller Mark Levine, responding to news of rising rents on Sunday, recommended that the city rezone neighborhoods to allow more homebuilding, invest in affordable housing development, and cut construction regulations to increase housing supply and bring down costs.

Conservative lawyer Mike Davis responded to Levine’s recommendations by asking, “How about deporting illegals?”

AMERICA’S HOUSING MARKET COULD RUN OUT OF SOMETHING MORE IMPORTANT THAN HOMES

New York mayor Zohran Mamdani and his wife Rama Duwaj

The White House claims that declining rental costs in the South and Southwest have been caused by its deportations, a claim disputed by critics who point toward broader market conditions. A March 2024 academic study found that deportations could actually increase overall housing prices by harming the construction industry, though the authors conceded that removing illegal immigrants could also cause housing demand to come down somewhat.

Mamdani campaigned on addressing New York City’s housing crisis by freezing increases for rent-stabilized tenants, building 200,000 new affordable homes and expanding tenant protections. Since taking office, he has successfully frozen rents on rent-stabilized leases, released a housing plan aimed at building and preserving 400,000 affordable homes and moved to expand rental vouchers.

“Zohran Mamdani ‘froze the rent’ and served himself some taxpayer-funded cake,” Red State writer Bonchie posted to X, referring to Mamdani’s celebrating the rent freeze with cake earlier this summer. “Then rents hit an all-time high, vacancy rates reached the highest since COVID, and he proposed a 20% raise for himself. Incredible stuff.”

Critics argue that rent freezes will lead to increased prices for everyone else and disincentivize property owners from doing more than the bare minimum to maintain units that they aren’t being paid market rate to rent.

Mamdani’s office did not respond to a request for comment when reached by Fox News Digital on Monday.

Even as NATO allies increase defense spending, arm Ukraine and impose sanctions aimed at weakening the Kremlin, European Union countries haven’t yet been able to shake dependence on Russian liquefied natural gas, providing Russia with a key source of revenue as it wages war in Ukraine.

A new analysis of commercial shipping data shows European countries spent billions in the first half of 2026 on purchases of Arctic liquefied natural gas. Environmental watchdog Urgewald, using trade intelligence platform Kpler shipping data, found that 136 cargoes of the 140 cargoes exported from Russia’s flagship Yamal liquefied natural gas project between January and June were delivered to European Union ports.

China, once viewed as a major market for the Arctic project, received just four cargoes during the same period, the analysis found.

The group estimated those shipments were worth roughly €5.96 billion, or about $6.8 billion, based on benchmark European natural gas prices.

The figures expose one of the central contradictions confronting Europe four years into Russia’s invasion of Ukraine: While European governments have pledged to end dependence on Russian fossil fuels and cut off a key source of the Kremlin’s revenue, significant payments for Russian liquefied natural gas continue flowing during the bloc’s transition away from Russian energy.

The analysis found French ports were the destination for 51 cargoes from the Yamal liquefied natural gas project, followed by Belgium with 37 and Spain with 34 during the first six months of the year, according to the analysis. The figures reflect deliveries to ports rather than the nationality of the companies purchasing the liquefied natural gas or its ultimate destination within the European market, a spokesperson with France’s embassy in Washington emphasized.

The findings also come as NATO allies have committed to sharply increasing defense spending to 5% of GDP in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, highlighting the challenge of simultaneously strengthening Europe’s military deterrence while significant energy revenues continue flowing to Moscow.

The European Union has adopted legislation to phase out Russian gas imports in stages, with a ban on Russian liquefied natural gas under long-term contracts taking effect on Jan. 1, 2027, and a ban on Russian pipeline gas under long-term contracts following on Sept. 30, 2027. While pipeline gas imports from Russia have fallen sharply since 2022, Russian liquefied natural gas has remained a significant source of supply for several European countries.

TRUMP CALLS OUT NATO AHEAD OF SUMMIT, CALLING IT ‘RIDICULOUS’ FOR US TO PERSIST ON ‘ONE SIDED PATH’

President Donald Trump has criticized Europe for its continued dependence on Russian fuel sources.

“Europe has sadly spent more money buying Russian oil and gas than they have spent on defending Ukraine, by far,” Trump said during his March 4, 2025, address to a joint session of Congress.

European Commission spokesperson Anna-Kaisa Itkonen said the increase likely reflected “frontloaded deliveries and adjustments to contractual arrangements ahead of tighter restrictions,” noting that the ban on new Russian gas contracts only took effect in March and that most remaining imports are under long-term contracts that are not scheduled to end until 2027.

The commission also said market disruptions following the closure of the Strait of Hormuz prompted efforts to maximize alternative liquefied natural gas supplies and that restrictions on Russian liquefied natural gas transshipment may have resulted in more cargoes remaining within the European Union market.

“As a result of President Trump’s energy dominance agenda, the United States is the world’s largest producer and exporter of oil and natural gas — with more than enough supply for both the United States and our allies,” the White House said in a statement. “The United States is Europe’s largest supplier of natural gas, and Europe will continue to import more and more U.S. LNG.”

The Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs told Fox News Digital in a statement that Belgium backed the EU’s agreement to phase out Russian gas imports and was “actively working toward that objective,” adding that the country was implementing all EU measures in the field.

Fox News Digital has reached out to the Spanish embassy in Washington for comment.

Russia’s use of energy as a geopolitical tool came into sharp focus after its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, when Moscow sharply reduced or halted natural gas supplies to several European countries, including Poland, Bulgaria, Finland and Germany. The European Commission accused the Kremlin of attempting to “weaponize” Europe’s energy supply after Russia cut deliveries through multiple routes, including the Nord Stream 1 pipeline.

The disruptions accelerated the European Union’s effort to end decades of reliance on Russian fossil fuels and deprive Moscow of a key source of export revenue.

In 2022, members of the European Parliament called on the European Commission to investigate allegations that Russian-backed organizations sought to shape European Union energy debates, including by opposing domestic fossil fuel development and nuclear power. The allegations have been the subject of political debate, but no comprehensive public finding has established that Russian funding broadly shaped Europe’s green energy policies.

TRUMP DEMANDS END TO TRADE WITH KEY US ALLY, CALLS IT A ‘WASTED CAUSE’

The data illustrate the strategic challenges of unwinding decades of dependence on Russian energy while maintaining stable supplies for European consumers.

Continued liquefied natural gas purchases provide Russia with billions of dollars in export revenue at a time when the U.S. and its allies have sought to squeeze Moscow’s energy earnings in an effort to limit the Kremlin’s ability to sustain its war in Ukraine.

In June, EU foreign ministers approved another round of sanctions targeting Russia’s military-industrial complex and “curb[ing] Russia’s energy revenues” by tightening restrictions on the country’s shadow fleet and the networks that help export its oil.

Spain, one of Europe’s largest importers of Russian liquefied natural gas, has emerged as a focal point in the debate over the bloc’s planned phaseout. The head of the Port of Bilbao urged Brussels to delay its 2027 ban on Russian liquefied natural gas imports in an article published June 27 in the Financial Times, warning Europe could become overly dependent on U.S. gas. Spain’s energy minister rejected that argument, saying the recent rise in Russian liquefied natural gas imports was temporary and insisting Europe should move ahead with plans to eliminate Russian gas imports beginning in 2027.

Spain has also emerged as a frequent target of Trump: last week during the NATO Summit in Ankara Wednesday and Thursday, he blasted Madrid over its refusal to meet the alliance’s new defense spending target, calling Spain “a wasted cause” and “a terrible partner” while threatening to cut off trade.

The clash followed earlier disputes over Spain’s refusal to support U.S. military operations against Iran.

The findings come days after bipartisan senators and the Trump administration reached an agreement on legislation that would authorize sweeping secondary sanctions against countries continuing to purchase Russian energy. The proposal, championed by late Sen. Lindsey Graham and Sen. Richard Blumenthal, is intended to increase pressure on Moscow by targeting foreign buyers of Russian oil and natural gas.

“As Russia intensifies its slaughter of civilians, it is imperative that the legislative and executive branches work together to create tools to exact a heavy price on those who buy Russian oil and natural gas, fueling the Putin war machine,” leading senators said in a joint statement.

Socialists split over infighting about Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez endorsement

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Infighting has erupted within the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) about the selection of its pick for U.S. president, as the group’s influence continues to grow on the national stage and speculation swirls about a 2028 presidential run by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y.

The infighting reveals fractures in the roughly 120,000-member group, which has emerged as the preeminent socialist group in America. The division also sheds light on how some Democratic Socialists of America members believe the group can gain a permanent foothold in American politics and deliver on its socialist ideals on a national scale.

Some Democratic Socialists of America leaders have been pushing for an earlier presidential endorsement in place of the group’s normal practice of selecting endorsements at its biennial national convention, which is set for summer 2027.

One faction known as the “Groundwork” caucus is pushing strongly for the group to conduct a national member poll and “endorse AOC on day one.” The caucus believes an early endorsement will help DSA hold a more influential early role in 2028 presidential politics and “build power for socialism.”

DEMOCRATIC SOCIALISTS OF AMERICA LEADER SAYS ‘MANY’ IN GROUP WOULD BE ‘THRILLED’ AT AOC IN 2028

In one online petition, DSA members voiced that “if we don’t have a member poll, we as members will be left out of DSA’s most fundamental way of building a democratic strategy.”

However, in a Sunday 14–13 vote, DSA’s National Political Committee (NPC) rejected a proposal to allow the group’s 2028 presidential endorsement to be decided through a nationwide all-member poll, according to Canary Mission. By rejecting the proposal, the committee left the issue to DSA’s existing convention process, meaning any national endorsement decision would likely wait until the organization’s next convention in August 2027.

The decision was blasted by many DSA members online.

Gustavo Gordillo, co-chair of the group’s New York City chapter, posted on X that “DSA’s national leadership (the NPC) just voted to overturn our convention & took away rank and file members’ right to vote in an all-member poll on presidential endorsement.”

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., sparked rumors she is considering a run for president after posting a campaign-style video on social media.

Gordillo added that the committee is “taking away our members’ right to vote” while NYC-DSA, the group’s largest chapter, is “send(ing) them ~ $2M per year in dues.”

Likewise, J. Ryder, founding editor of a magazine on communism, wrote that the committee’s decision “to suppress polling the will of the members on presidential endorsement is severely disappointing.”

Ryder added that “this will inevitably put DSA on the back foot in the 2028 moment,” writing, “Waiting to endorse in August of next year at the convention may mean 6 months+ of vital AOC campaign time where the masses will be mobilizing without intervention by DSA.”

“The worst part is, the members want to mobilize, they see the opportunity that this moment represents for socialism and want so desperately to grasp it,” he added. “The fact the (sic) some sectarians on the NPC are suppressing even a non-binding poll shows that they know this, and are scared of the implications of member democracy and mass politics in DSA.”

In response, committee member Amy Wilhelm fired back at Gordillo, posting on X that “NYC members deserve co-chairs that don’t lie.”

Wilhelm said that “there was never intention to prevent” DSA members from participating in chapter polls, and that “with the resolution where we left it today chapters are allowed to carry out the poll per their standard method.”

Likewise, another X user who goes by the name “tylerisposting” blasted Gordillo, telling him in an X post to “stop lying” and “stop trying to foment a split.”

Meanwhile, Eve Seitchik, a Massachusetts DSA member, characterized the events of the day as “a massive escalation of factional tensions,” adding, “I’m afraid DSA has been set down a dangerous path.”

SOCIALISTS LAUNCH RADICAL PLATFORM TO ABOLISH THE US SENATE IN BID TO FUNDAMENTALLY TRANSFORM AMERICA

Members of the Democratic Socialists of America rally in New York City

The authors posited that DSA’s recent electoral wins and Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., “Fight Oligarchy” tour “have shown that there is energy all across the country to support a bold, democratic socialist presidential campaign.”

They argued that “DSA should be ready to position ourselves as the political home for the millions of people that will be inspired by AOC’s message and position our organization as the vital core of AOC’s campaign.”

They wrote that Ocasio-Cortez is “on the precipice of running for — and potentially winning — the presidency of the United States” and that “this opportunity is years in the making.”

“If we drag our feet,” they wrote, “we will have forced ourselves into the backseat and miss the opportunity to strike when the iron is hot.”

The four-term congresswoman has not directly said whether she will launch a presidential run in 2028. Rumors are also circulating about her opting to instead run for the Senate to topple Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y.

Though Ocasio-Cortez is considered one of the most prominent socialists in the country and a close ally of Sanders, she has run afoul of DSA leadership several times.

In summer 2025, the group issued a statement condemning Ocasio-Cortez’s vote against an amendment to block additional funding for Israel’s “Iron Dome,” which would have denied Israel an additional $500 million in U.S. funding for its preeminent missile defense system. In 2024, the DSA withdrew its endorsement for Ocasio-Cortez’s re-election, citing that she had not met its conditions, including opposing all funding to Israel and publicly supporting boycott and sanctions for the country.

DSA’s New York City chapter notably retained its endorsement for Ocasio-Cortez.

Commenting on DSA’s deliberations, a spokesperson for Canary Mission told Fox News Digital that “an AOC presidency would give that movement more than influence: it would give its agenda access to the full power of the executive branch.”

The spokesperson added that “putting that power in the hands of a movement that repeatedly places ideological allegiance above America’s national interests, regards America and its allies as the problem, and shows sympathy toward their adversaries would not be political progress. It would be a profound national-security risk—and could be devastating for the country.”

“DSA presents its agenda as a project of reconstruction, but much of its politics begins with dismantling the institutions, alliances, and economic system that sustain those achievements,” the spokesperson said, adding, “For more than a decade, Canary Mission has documented numerous instances in which anti-Zionist activism has crossed into antisemitic harassment, support for extremism, and hostility toward the United States and its democratic allies.”

“As these ideas have moved from activist circles into mainstream politics, DSA has emerged as the primary vehicle through which radical ideology is translated into political success,” said the spokesperson.

Pete Hegseth creates task force with DOJ to prosecute leakers to media

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth on Monday announced the creation of a joint task force with the Department of Justice to identify and prosecute officials who leak “sensitive information” to the media.

Hegseth said the Pentagon’s Office of General Counsel (OGC) may request and receive all information, support and records across the department regarding news media leak investigations.

“To combat the dangers that leaks pose, effectively immediately, I have delegated tasking authority to the war department’s ‌office of general counsel, empowering OGC to request and receive all information, records and support across the department concerning media leak investigations,” he said in a video shared on X.

“Leaked information risks lives, these new tools and processes will greatly assist us in protecting our joint force,” Hegseth continued. “The security of our nation cannot be a bargaining chip for those who seek momentary headlines, access to confidential and secret information is a sacred trust, and those who betray that trust will be met with the full force of the law.”

The secretary also thanked Acting U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche for his support, adding that he was “proud that our departments are working together closer than we have ever before.”

Hegseth’s announcement comes just days after the DOJ issued subpoenas to four reporters at The New York Times, attempting to force them to testify before a federal grand jury after the newspaper reported on the security concerns involving the plane gifted to President Donald Trump by Qatar that he flew on to Turkey for a recent NATO summit.

The subpoenas were widely criticized by The New York Times, journalists at various news outlets and press freedom groups, arguing that the Trump administration is attempting to intimidate reporters conducting legitimate news-gathering about the government.

“The appearance of federal law enforcement agents on the doorstep of news reporters should shock the conscience of any American who believes in the Constitution and the press freedom it protects,” an attorney for the newspaper, David McCraw, said in a statement.

“Our journalists report the facts and advance the American public’s right to know how their government is operating and their taxpayer dollars are being used,” McCraw added. “This brazen act should be seen as nothing more than an attempt to prevent the public from knowing what is happening in their country by intimidating journalists from doing their jobs.”

Since taking over as head of the Pentagon last year, Hegseth has sought to crack down on leaks to the media.

Last year, the department opened investigations into those accused of leaking classified information to the press and threatened to conduct polygraphs to identify leakers.

Hegseth has also attempted to impose restrictions on reporters covering the Pentagon. He had forced them to sign a pledge stating that they would not solicit any unauthorized material, even if the information was unclassified. Most Pentagon reporters turned in their press badges rather than accept the department’s restrictions on news-gathering.

That policy is facing lawsuits, and a judge last month granted a preliminary injunction, ruling that the department’s requirement that journalists be accompanied by an official chaperone at all times violated the First Amendment in response to a case brought by The New York Times.

Stephen Miller honors Lindsey Graham as a personal friend and ally

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Stephen Miller, a policy advisor for the White House, paid tribute to the late Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., on Monday afternoon, calling him a personal “friend.”

“Lindsey was of a mold that I don’t think we’re going to see for a very long time,” Miller said. “He was someone who really understood how the power of rhetoric, how the power of communication as a senator can actually change outcomes.”

“Lindsey really believed you could change people’s minds through the force and persuasion of his rhetoric.”

Miller, like many members of the Trump administration, continues to reel from Graham’s sudden death late on Saturday evening, paying homage to a key ally in the Senate. His remarks reveal a closer relationship between the two than has previously been reported.

“Lindsey, I miss you, Godspeed and I’ll see you on the other side,” Miller said.

While Graham and President Donald Trump had an up-and-down relationship before and after Trump’s first term, Graham was also a close friend to the president and highly influential on domestic and foreign policy. Graham consistently urged the U.S. to assume a leadership role in the international community, arguing the world was safer and more stable with American engagement.

“Lindsey was the most effective, consistent advocate for the president’s agenda in the Senate,” Miller said. “That is a historical legacy that will always belong to him.”

Miller added a few other details about their relationship, expressing gratitude for Graham’s readiness to work with the administration.

“Lindsay was just so fundamentally good to us, to all of us. Every time we needed everything and anything at all, we called Lindsay. Without question, without hesitation, he would help out. I think it’s important for people to see the fullness of the picture of Lindsey Graham, why people liked him as much as they did, because he was so generous in heart and in spirit,” Miller said.

I still honestly almost haven’t with the process that he’s gone, because it was so complete and sudden.

Lindsey Graham’s office released a preliminary cause of death on Sunday evening that found the longtime lawmaker had died from “aortic dissection due to arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease.”

Aortic dissection is when a tear occurs in the inner wall of the aorta, the body’s main artery, and is a life-threatening medical emergency.

On Monday, South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster appointed Graham’s sister, Darline Graham Nordone, to serve out the remainder of his term with Trump’s blessing.

It’s unclear if Darline would consider running for a full six-year term.

Maine Senate candidates call to abolish ICE after Biddeford shooting

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

PORTLAND, Maine – Some of the leading contenders in the race to replace former candidate Graham Platner as the Democratic Senate nominee in Maine are amplifying calls to abolish ICE after a fatal shooting by federal immigration officers in the northern New England state.

Hours after U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents on Monday shot and killed a man in Biddeford, which is located about 15 miles south-west of Portland, four of the candidates joined hundreds of protesters who marched by the shooting site.

The shooting comes as the battle to replace Platner is heating up, and will likely boost immigration as an issue in a crucial Senate race that may determine the Senate majority.

“I think we are at the point where ICE needs to be abolished,” Nirav Shah, the former director of the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention, told Fox News Digital. “ICE in its current form has shown itself incapable of doing its job.”

Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows, speaking with reporters, said, “This is not acceptable in America. A young man, a dad, has been killed by ICE…This must stop. We need to get ICE out of the streets.”

Troy Jackson, a former state Senate president, took to social media immediately after the shooting to write, “Abolish ICE.”

Jackson held a sign at the protest that called for abolishing ICE, and reiterated that he’s been calling for the dismantling of the agency for months.

Paige Loud, a social worker and former congressional candidate who has also launched a Senate bid, also attended the protest.

“We must abolish ICE and prosecute the leaders of these operations that are destroying communities,” she said in a social media post.

The incident in Maine is the second in a week when ICE agents have used deadly force, following the fatal shooting during a traffic stop in Houston, Texas.

The latest incidents are reigniting protests and scrutiny of federal agents months after the shooting deaths in Minneapolis, Minnesota at the beginning of the year of Renee Good and Alex Pretti. Those shootings drew weeks of national coverage and sharp debate over President Donald Trump’s ramped-up deportation efforts amid his administration’s crackdown on illegal immigration.

The Maine attorney general’s office, which is investigating Monday’s shooting along with the FBI, said initial statements suggest the motorist who was the target of the enforcement operation was attempting to flee in the direction of an ICE agent.

Two immigration advocacy groups said the man who was killed was authorized to work in the U.S. and had a Social Security number.

The shooting in Maine came three days after Platner ended his campaign amid mounting controversies and allegations of sexual misconduct that he had repeatedly denied, and a chorus of calls from top Democrats in Maine, the nation’s capital, and across the country to drop out of the race immediately.

A populist Democrat who was backed last September by progressive champion Sen. Bernie Sanders, Platner was challenging longtime Republican Sen. Susan Collins in a high-profile, combustible and expensive race in Maine, which is one of a handful that will determine if the GOP holds onto its slim Senate majority in November’s midterm elections.

Seven Democrats have filed to run for the nomination, which will be determined by roughly 600 voting delegates at a July 25 convention held by the Maine Democratic Party.

Hours later, Collins said in another statement that Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Markwayne Mullin “informed me that the Boston office of the DHS Inspector General has taken over the investigation of the Biddeford shooting in cooperation with the FBI.”

Sunshine Protection Act moves toward House vote to end clock changes

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

A bipartisan push to make Daylight Saving Time permanent is heading for a chamber-wide vote after clearing a key House hurdle.

The House Rules Committee on Monday teed up a floor vote on the Sunshine Protection Act, which would allow states to enact Daylight Saving Time year-round — with an option to opt out. The committee approved the rule in a 6-4 vote.

The measure has the support of many coastal lawmakers and President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly urged Congress to make Daylight Saving Time permanent and end the twice-a-year ritual of changing clocks — a practice currently observed by every state except Hawaii and most of Arizona.

Proponents argue that resetting clocks has negative health impacts, while permanent Daylight Saving Time would boost outdoor recreation, tourism and economic activity, among other benefits.

CONGRESS EYES RARE BIPARTISAN HOUSING WIN WITH OR WITHOUT TRUMP’S HELP

Most Americans already set their clocks forward one hour each spring to preserve more evening daylight before “falling back” one hour in November.

“Americans are overwhelmingly supportive of this policy and want to end the practice of ‘springing forward’ and ‘falling back.’ Locking the clock all year long would have positive impacts on sleep schedules, energy conservation, motor vehicle safety, and our economy,” Chairman Brett Guthrie, R-Ky., said in an opening statement Monday.

“In practice, this change would mean more time for people to exercise outside, visit family, attend concerts and sporting events, attract customers to their retail businesses, and more.”

“Floridians and Americans across the country are tired of the biannual time change, and the evidence is clear that permanent daylight saving time can improve public health, reduce traffic accidents, lower crime and encourage more outdoor activity,” Rep. Vern Buchanan, R-Fla., who authored the measure, previously said in a May news release.

“Ending the clock change is a commonsense reform that will improve everyday life for millions of Americans,” he added.

The legislation’s momentum comes after the House Energy and Commerce Committee overwhelmingly passed the measure 48-1 in May.

“It’s time that people can stop worrying about the ‘Clock,’ not to mention all of the work and money that is spent on this ridiculous, twice-yearly production,” Trump wrote following the Sunshine Protection Act’s advancement out of committee. “It will also be a very nice WIN for the Republican Party. Take it! We are going with the far more popular alternative, Saving Daylight, which gives you a longer, brighter Day — And who can be against that — This is an easy one!”

SLEEP DOCTOR REVEALS THE BRUTAL HEALTH DOWNSIDE OF DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME

Roughly 20 states have already passed legislation that would make Daylight Saving Time permanent if Congress were to authorize the practice. Alabama, South Carolina, Oregon, Maine and Florida are among those places.

But opponents, including several medical organizations, argue that permanent standard time — which provides more sunlight in the morning — would be the healthier option because it would more closely align with the body’s natural circadian rhythms.

Rep. Mary Gay Scanlon, D-Pa., proposed amending the bill with language from her co-sponsored Sunshine for Our Kids Act, which would make standard time permanent nationwide. The amendment was quickly rejected.

Scanlon argued that permanent daylight saving time would pose significant health and safety risks by leaving more Americans — particularly children — in darkness during morning hours. She also pointed to the nation’s brief experiment with year-round daylight saving time in 1974, which Congress abandoned after widespread public backlash.

Rep. Nanette Barragán, D-Calif., was also the lone lawmaker to oppose the legislation during the Energy and Commerce Committee markup in May, citing concerns that year-round daylight saving time could negatively affect children’s health and sleep schedules.

Some conservative lawmakers have also argued that GOP leadership should be focused on what they describe as more pressing legislative issues, including legislation codifying Trump’s border security executive orders and the stalled SAVE America Act.

“Republicans are majoring in the minors — fiddling with the clocks while the country burns,” Rep. Keith Self, R-Texas, a member of the conservative House Freedom Caucus, wrote Monday.

The House has already passed versions of the SAVE America Act multiple times, but the measure has struggled to overcome the Senate’s legislative filibuster.

Henry McMaster to appoint Darline Graham to South Carolina Senate

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Darline Graham Nordone, the sister of the late Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., was appointed to fill her brother’s Senate seat after a push from President Donald Trump.

“It’s my honor to ask his little sister, Darlene Graham, to finish his work for him now,” South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster said at a ceremony on Monday afternoon.

McMaster, a close Trump ally, appointed Nordone nearly 48 hours after her brother and longtime lawmaker suddenly died from an aortic dissection.

McMaster’s pick comes after Trump pushed for Graham’s “wonderful sister” Nordone to get the job.

“This would be a fabulous tribute to Lindsey, who loved her dearly,” Trump wrote in a post to Truth Social on Monday morning.

Others were also initially considered, including Lt. Gov. Pam Evette, who Trump endorsed in her failed bid to clinch the GOP nomination for governor, former Rep. Trey Gowdy and former Sen. Jim DeMint, sources told Fox News Digital.

Her appointment fills the seat through Jan. 3, while voters decide in November who will hold the seat for the next six-year term.

At this point, it’s unclear if Nordone, 62, would consider running for a full six-year term, and there’s already private jockeying to run in the special election, set for Aug. 11, to secure the GOP nomination in the Palmetto State, with Reps. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., and Ralph Norman, R-S.C., both eyeing a bid.

Graham’s death narrowed Republicans’ Senate majority and added pressure to keep every GOP vote available, especially with Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., still being treated after a fall and pneumonia.

Nordone, who has largely kept out of the public eye, is married to Larry Nordone and has two daughters. She has worked with the South Carolina Commission for the Blind (SCCB) as commissioner, according to the organization’s 2026-27 budget. The SCCB provides services aimed at helping blind and low-vision South Carolina residents gain employment, independence and self-sufficiency.

In the past, she has described a personal closeness with Lindsey Graham, having been raised by him after the death of their mother when she was just 11.

“I have always looked up to Lindsey. He’s just always been there for me as long as I can remember. If I fell down and scraped my knee, Lindsey was the one I ran to,” she recounted in a 2014 campaign ad.

Nordone has not previously held elected office. She will become South Carolina’s first female senator.

Following Trump’s endorsement, Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C., the chair of the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC), also put his support behind Nordone on Monday morning ahead of the announcement.

“Lindsey Graham’s sister, Darline Graham Nordone, would be a fantastic pick to serve out the remainder of the Senate term,” Scott wrote in a post to X.

“After speaking with Darline, there is no one better who understands Lindsey’s love for family, our state and our country.”

McMaster also described speaking with Darline ahead of her appointment as well as with Trump.

“After we spoke on the phone in the wee hours of Sunday morning and you agreed to serve through tears, I had wondered what you would say and I was humbled by your quickness to see the duty that you had to serve. And I called the president afterwards, and he thought it was a great idea,” McMaster said.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., also voiced his support for Nordone.

He told CNN Monday afternoon that he had already spoken with both Nordone and McMaster the day before, and believed that tapping the longtime lawmaker’s sister to fill his spot, “in my view, makes a lot of sense.”

“I think, in many respects, it would be a way of extending Lindsey’s legacy here, and certainly something that, if that’s what they decide to end up doing, I think there’d be a lot of support for,” Thune said.

The filing period for a special primary election begins on July 21, with the special election to follow on Aug. 11. A runoff, if needed, would be held Aug. 25, leaving the candidate just two months to campaign before the Nov. 3 general election.

Thune delivers tearful Senate tribute to late Sen. Lindsey Graham

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

In the Senate, there’s a black veil covering a desk. On top there’s a bowl of striking white roses. That’s where Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., used to sit.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., pointed to that desk during an emotional tribute to the late Senator on Monday. Graham was a confidant, trusted advisor and friend to Thune. And through tears, he set about remembering the lawmaker who spent 30 years in Washington, D.C., making a mark on his state and country.

“It’s difficult to believe that Lindsey Graham is no longer here with us,” Thune said. “That we won’t run into him at a meeting today or share a joke with him at this afternoon’s vote. The halls of the Senate already feel empty without him. And I know I’m not alone in that feeling.”

As Thune spoke about Graham, the late lawmaker’s staff sat in the Senate chamber as tears filled the room. And since Thune became the leader of the Senate GOP, you would oftentime see Graham enter his office just off the Senate floor.

He was there to talk down Republican rebels who threatened to sink President Donald Trump’s “big, beautiful bill,” and once earlier this year stormed into Thune’s office declaring his resistance to a deal struck by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and the president to avert a government shutdown.

But he was there, and Thune noted that “Lindsey was fearless in his commitment to the causes that he espoused.”

SENATE RETURNS TO PACKED AGENDA AFTER GRAHAM’S DEATH SHRINKS GOP MARGIN

“It didn’t matter to him whether he would catch flak on an issue,” Thune said. “He was undaunted by the politics if he believed he was right on the principle.”

“Senator. Warrior. Patriot. Statesman,” Thune continued. “Words that will be written about Lindsey. But for me, most of all, Mr. President, he was my friend.”

Shortly after Thune’s tribute to Graham, South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster officially tapped his sister, Darline Graham Nordone, to fill his seat for the remainder of his term. It’s a move that Thune, Trump and Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C. backed.

“I think this is what Lindsey would have wanted, and I plan to honor him in this way,” Nordone said at the ceremony. “Now to Lindsey, I miss you more than I can even put into words. But I’m going to do this, I got it.”

Back in the Senate, Thune remembers Graham as a “staunch conservative and a fierce advocate for South Carolina,” but as a lawmaker who was willing to cross the aisle to find a solution. Through it all, Thune said that he would miss Graham’s friendship and humor.

“I am comforted by the knowledge that in the end, he has just changed his address. And that one day, Mr. President,” Thune said through tears. “We will laugh together again.”

Trump IRS lawsuit ruled improper, attorneys referred to state bar

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

An Obama-appointed federal judge in Florida rebuked President Donald Trump’s legal team Monday, finding his $10 billion lawsuit against the IRS was brought for an “improper purpose” to legitimize a controversial Justice Department settlement.

U.S. District Judge Kathleen Williams of the Southern District of Florida found the case was brought for an “improper purpose,” rebuked Trump’s legal team and referred attorney Alejandro Brito to the Florida Bar for possible disciplinary action.

“The Parties here are not private actors to a mine-run dispute, recounting their proficiency in the art of the deal they negotiated,” wrote Williams. “Lead Plaintiff and Defendants are public servants—the pinnacle of the Executive Branch—sworn to uphold the law, faithfully perform the duties of their office, and protect the interests of the American public.”

Trump, his two eldest sons and the Trump Organization sued the IRS and Treasury Department seeking at least $10 billion in damages for failing to protect his confidential tax information after IRS contractor Charles Littlejohn leaked his records in 2019. Littlejohn pleaded guilty to one count of unauthorized disclosure of tax return and return information.

Williams found that Trump was using the lawsuit to advance his own interests while controlling the federal agency he had sued.

She was appointed by Obama in 2011 and previously served as a Federal Public Defender for the Southern District of Florida.

Trump envisioned creating an “Anti-Weaponization Fund” from the lawsuit settlement to compensate alleged victims of government “lawfare” as well to halt IRS audits of his finances.

The fund drew an enormous amount of scrutiny from Democrats, calling it a “slush fund” to personally benefit Trump and his allies. The fund was later dropped after political backlash, with DOJ Acting Attorney General moving to walk back that portion of the proposed settlement.

The lawsuit puts the controversial anti-weaponization fund back under the microscope as confirmation hearings begin Wednesday for Blanche’s nomination as attorney general.

Williams called out Blanche in her ruling, saying that he appeared to be speaking for both sides of the lawsuit.

“The Court is extremely troubled by the testimony given by Acting Attorney General Blanche on May 19, 2026. In response to why the ‘settlement agreement’ had not been submitted to this Court for review, he stated that ‘there is no judge’ because the case had been dismissed and, therefore, there was “no mechanism” for reviewing the agreement,” wrote Williams.

“While temporally accurate, this answer is, at best, misleading and, at worst, disingenuous,” she added.

3-time deported illegal immigrant accused in fatal crash roiling House race

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

A sprawling, 25-county congressional district more than 2,000 miles from the Mexican border was thrust into the national immigration spotlight this month after a 6-year-old girl was killed in a crash allegedly caused by a three-time deported illegal immigrant with a history of driving while intoxicated.

The economy usually dominates politics in North Carolina’s 1st congressional district, which consistently ranks among the nation’s poorest districts by poverty rate. But, that changed after six-year-old Calli Toler was pronounced dead after a wreck allegedly caused when Mexican national Jaime Santiago Corona ran a stop sign west of Vanceboro last week – just a mile from the district line.

The illegal immigration crisis has been “hitting home … in North Carolina, when you saw fentanyl dealers being caught, you saw terrorists being caught,” Laurie Buckhout of Edenton, a retired Iraq War battalion commander and the Republican candidate seeking a rematch against incumbent Democratic Rep. Don Davis of Snow Hill, in what is now a slightly Republican-leaning; formerly Democrat-leaning swing district.

“It has continued because, under the Biden administration with Don Davis’ oversight, you allowed so many illegals in the country [and] just a little bit ago, an illegal alien blew through a stop sign and killed a little girl,” Buckhout said in an exclusive interview with Fox News Digital.

Davis, who is also a retired military officer, said in a statement that he supported the Laken Riley Act, adding federal immigration laws must be enforced to ensure “safe communities” for Carolinians. He said Corona was driving on a revoked license when he crashed into the Tolers on Warren Jones Road near US-17.

Buckhout said Toler’s mother and sister survived after being treated at a Greenville hospital, adding that despite the Trump administration trying to crack down on illegal immigration, the repercussions of prior years’ leniency “continues to happen,” she said.

Corona was deported in 2019, 2023 and 2024 and re-entered illegally a fourth time before the Vanceboro crash, according to DHS. He also has a criminal record that includes DUI charges, DHS Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis said.

Pitt County authorities, who have custody of Corona, indicated they plan to cooperate with ICE.

Buckhout said President Donald Trump’s “America First” agenda and DHS’ mass deportation actions have gone a long way to stem the tide of cases like the Tolers’, but that if elected she would push for higher pay for agents, and improved technology at the Mexican border like funding for sensors and other tools the feds can use to secure the homeland.

“We need to support them more… More technology, more access roads going down to the border so that they can access the border safely. We need to let them safely do their jobs with every technology available,” Buckhout said.

“The safety of the American people depends upon it. You don’t have sovereignty without a border. I mean, that’s just the bottom line.”

Buckhout also pointed to two other illegal immigrants’ cases in the district – the arrest of Jose Valdez-Masias on homicide charges near Warrenton and Josue Cano-Landero on child fondling and strongarm rape charges in the Inner Banks.

She also returned to the importance of reviving the economy in her area, noting that jobs are as important as national security for the people of NC-1.

“We need to protect our food sources, protect our farmers, protect our fishermen. And once again, build up the economy from the ground up because the Democrats have been ignoring it for so long,” she said – as inland NC-1 is historically significant in the tobacco and peanut industries while the coastal areas are home to key fishing areas.

A spokesperson for Davis’ campaign countered that the Democrat’s record “speaks for itself” in his expected-to-be-tight race against Buckhout.

“Laurie Buckhout seems to be increasingly bothered by the resources Congressman Davis continues to deliver for ENC, and was most recently perturbed by the fact that he is fighting for a local hospital to be reopened in Martin County,” the spokesperson said.

Darline Graham Nordone: Graham’s sister revealed as Trump’s Senate pick

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Tragedy built a strong bond between Darline Graham Nordone and her brother, Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C.

Tragedy is once again striking its bell, this time with the sudden passing of her brother and father figure. And now, she’s being considered to replace him in the Senate, just over 24 hours after his death.

President Donald Trump and Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C., both want her in the role, and sources have told Fox News that Scott has been speaking with her about filling in for the remainder of Graham’s term.

Trump is pushing South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster to appoint her, announcing that he recommended the governor tap Graham’s “wonderful sister” to serve out his term as a caretaker.

“This would be a fabulous tribute to Lindsey, who loved her dearly,” Trump said on Truth Social.

McMaster is slated to announce his pick Monday afternoon in a news conference that Scott is also expected to attend.

If he does tap Nordone, it would be a temporary selection. In the background, private jockeying is already happening to succeed Graham as the GOP nominee in the Palmetto State.

The filing deadline to succeed Graham and run for a full six-year Senate term opens July 21 and a special election primary is scheduled for Aug. 11. Many South Carolina politicians have expressed interest in the job, seeing the vacant Senate seat as a once-in-a-generation opportunity to serve in the upper chamber.

Meanwhile, Nordone has never held public office, unlike her brother, who served in Congress for three decades in both the House and Senate. Nordone is a mother of two and worked in a vocational rehabilitation role that specifically helped people with disabilities find employment in South Carolina.

And whether she’s ready to accept the position remains unclear.

“Actually, I’m just kind of like devastated right now,” Nordone told the New York Post shortly after Trump’s announcement.

Nordone and Graham shared a unique bond, too. Graham was in his early 20s when both their parents died within less than a year of one another. That tragedy pushed him to become her primary legal guardian and caretaker, thrusting him into the role of father and brother to his younger sister.

“Of all the things that have happened in my life, her turning out so well is the highlight of it by far,” Graham told C-SPAN in 2015.

Nordone highlighted the outsized role Graham played in raising her after the death of their parents. After becoming her legal guardian, he enlisted in the Air Force to allow her to qualify for his military benefits. She later credited him with ensuring that she completed high school and college.

“He’s kind of like a brother, a father and a mother rolled into one,” she told The New York Times in an interview in 2015.

Nordone was a frequent presence in Graham’s campaigns during his decades-long career.

“My parents, they were loving people and cared about us, but Lindsey was always the one that took care of me and helped me with my homework,” she said in a campaign spot titled “Darline.” “If I was sick, he gave me my medicine. He taught me how to ride a bicycle.”

“He never let me down,” she continued. “To take on that responsibility of raising a little sister — that came from within for Lindsey.”
